What are the origins of Practical Life? Why do children in the primary environment need these activities? What are the properties of the materials in this area? What are some of the standard activities in Practical Life? What are some Practical Life activities that we have heard of or seen in practice in other environments – why or why should we not include them in our environments. How are elements of culture embedded into this area.

By the end of this session, participants will:

Have a refreshed view of the purposes of Practical Life
Have a refreshed view of the properties of Practical Life materials/components
Be able to determine the usefulness of preliminary activities
Examine/question the cultural appropriateness of Practical Life activities
Have a list of new but appropriate Practical Life activities that can be introduced for children of various ages
Integrate culture into the Practical Life area

About Our Speaker

Sara (Priolo) Manna is from Toronto, Canada. She attended an AMI Montessori school as a child. During her time as an undergrad at the University of British Colombia, her mother became an elementary guide, inspiring Sara to get back to her Montessori roots. In 2006 she finished her AMI primary training at the Foundation for Montessori education. Over the next 8 years she taught in two different primary environments, had three children and eventually found herself on the pathway to trainer
